I know. I know. I know. I have been MIA for months. I fell off the face of the earth. I’ve been derelict in my duties and neglectful of my blog and readers. See, what had happened was…

I started a business in January and by March it had taken over my life, leaving precious little time for myself let alone blogging. For some reason I deluded myself into thinking I could build a grocery retail business in the most challenging market environment from scratch and still have time to wax philosophical about finances.

Between ingratiating myself into Chicago’s west side, driving hours out of the city to secure everything from a commercial size tent to shopping basket (thank you Craigslist), and 16 hour market days, I couldn’t even find the time to watch General Hospital let alone write 1000 word tomes on the one way outflows of my bank accounts.

It’s not that I’m giving up this blog.

I just had to take some time off. Don’t worry, I’ve made the most of that time. Since operating the first pop-up produce market in January, I’ve done over a dozen more. I’ve pivoted, tested different revenue streams, and in July I even did a 30 day retail pilot.

Just last week my entrepreneurial journey took an unexpected upturn when I was chosen for a five figure grant from my graduate alma mater. Yes, I applied for the award so I knew there was a possibility of getting selected, but I wasn’t betting on it. The funding takes effect in September for a planned expansion project. You know what also happens in September?

FINCON 2018

So the seminal conference for personal finance bloggers also happens to be September 26-29 in Orlando, FL. I purchased my ticket months ago, before I realized that there really aren’t vacation days when trying to get a business off the ground. Add in the acceptance of the grant and it’s no longer feasible for me to attend.
